We planned an unexpectedly great road trip itinerary in Ireland for our trip in August/September of 2014. I’d never been there, so I had no context to really understand if I, thousands of miles away scrolling through interweb searches about Ireland, could plan a good trip.
My saving grace were the kind internet folks that put information about their trips up on the web for all to see. I knew I needed to do that after our trip so we could be of some help!
We were in Ireland from August 30th to September 12, so a total of 14 days. You can do a trip through Ireland much faster if you want, but I enjoyed our pace. We got to see so much and really savor the time we had. I’ve seen a lot of folks forego Northern Ireland to do a shorter trip. Belfast was our favorite city in our entire Irish trip…so I wouldn’t recommend missing out on N. Ireland. There are other ways to keep it short.
Our trip was a good mix of culture/politics/nature. Off the beaten path and also the tried and trues. Please let me know if you have any other questions about or trip, are planning a trip to Ireland and want accommodation recommendations, or anything else!
*Note: Most people travel around Ireland in the opposite direction than we did. Because they drive on the opposite side of the road from us in the U.S., we weren’t on the side closest to the coast as we made our way around. For some folks, that’s important. If that’s you, then flip this trip around! I never noticed or cared. The roads are so small that it’s kind of nice to not be right on the edge…Also, it was fun to go from Dublin to Belfast in one day and have each city fresh in our minds to compare and contrast.
My main go to’s:

http://www.airbnb.com – We used this for every place we stayed.
http://www.roughguides.com – I bought their travel book for Ireland. Great guide!
